軽い話ですが久しぶりに書こうと思いました。「マウンティング」とはここ数年くらいインターネットでよく見かける概念だと思うのですが、私の考える最強のマウンティング理論があります。

個人的な思い出から始めると、私は中学・高校と柔道部に在籍していました。中学の頃は県で優勝をしようと意気込むチームで、春休みや夏休みには合同合宿に参加していました。全国から集まった猛者と練習をする機会です。私たちの頃だと講道学舎という柔道の私塾が東京にあって（今は解散してしまったようですが、古賀稔彦さん、吉田秀彦さんなどを輩出しています）、その関係中学からやたら強いチームが参加していました。私の中学のチームは地元の市では優勝できるくらいでしたが、講道学舎のＣチーム（３軍）と試合して、やっと引き分けたり負けたりくらいです。Ａチームとは同じ畳にすら立っていないと思います。

さて、それなのに講道学舎チームのメンバーは全員白帯なんですよね。Ｃチームはもとより、Ａチームもです。中学２年から３年に上がるくらいの春休みだったと思いますが、しっかりと練習している中学生ならば黒帯（初段）になる時期です。何故あんなにも強い彼らが白帯なのかわからず、部活の顧問の先生に聞いたのを覚えています。すると「彼らは（毎月１回の昇段試合のある）日曜日も練習している。黒帯をとりたければ３年の夏の全国大会の前に１日で取れるから、わざわざ時間をかけて毎月行く必要もないんだろう」みたいな説明だったんです。これは何かガーンと頭をたたかれたようでした。これがあのチームの「マウンティング」だったのかもしれませんし、そんなこと関係なく練習が大変だったのかもしれません。まあ何にせよ、昇段試合に足しげく通っていた自分や世の中の大半の中学生とは違う価値観や目標で柔道をやってたのだと思います。余談ながらその後アメリカやシンガポールの柔道場に通ったりして、大人でも細かい昇級で帯の色を変えるのに遭遇するんですよね。もちろんそういう変化がモチベーションになるのもわかりますし、文化の違いなどわからないこともないのですが、私は白帯で強い人にいまだに畏怖の念を感じます。そして「昇段試合に時間をかけず練習する」というのは、かなり極端なんだけど、本質的な選択と集中だと思います。そういう選択をしていくのが私の「最強のマウンティング」の指針です。

その後の人生でも同じような話に遭遇しました。例えば、ポスドク研究員時代の私の指導教官は分野では著名な研究者であり起業家なのですが、定期的にポスドクを集めてキャリアのアドバイスをくれる機会がありました。あるとき「パブリシティとかネットワーキングに研究者としてどう付き合っていくか」というような話題になりました。その流れで著名なダボス会議などの話になったのですが、指導教官曰く「あのような会議にはよく招待される。一度は娘たちが行きたいと言ったので参加した。ただ、ああいう会議ではあまり大事な話はされてないから、その後は一度も参加していない」と言ったんですよね。もうそれが私には痺れる憧れる、俺に言えないことを平然と言ってのける（ジョジョですね）だったのですが、やはり一流はかくあるべきではないかと思ったのでした。

念のために追記すると、著名なリーダーシップ国際会議などが無意味だというつもりはなくて、それは元ボスの意図するところでもないと思います。研究者には（あるいはどんな仕事もそうだと思いますが）時間配分や優先順位が大事です。逆説的なのですが、その手の会議に声がかかるためには、その手の会議に四六時中参加してるようではダメということでもあります。そういうのに呼ばれてない私が言っても説得力はないのですが、その手の会議に参加する研究者の面々を見れば、やはり実績で有無を言わせない人ばかりなのです。何にせよ、信頼できる研究者はメディア登壇に時間を取られずに論文書いてるとか、信頼できる起業家は「なんちゃらベンチャー会議」に参加して SNS にウェイ写真を載せたりせずプロダクトを作ってるといった話は言い尽くされていると思います。実践するのは難しいけど、そんなに極端な考え方でもなさそうです。本業以外にかける時間は最小限に決め打ちするのが一流なのだとすれば、柔道場での体験に通じるものがあるかなあ、と思っています。

そして私はその手の本質的なマウンティングができているのかと言えば、まだまだ実力が及びません。実力や実績は積み重ねで時間がかかりますので焦らずにやろうと思いますが、少なくとも自分の態度については、ウェイに流れていないか、易きに流れていないか、定期的に見直さないとなあ、と（たまに）思い出しています。

そんな話を今日友人と中国語検定の話をしていて思い出したので、以前に半分書きかけた文章を一気にまとめてみました。ちなみに中国語検定も細かく試験を受けるよりも、試験を受ける時間にも勉強して、一度で全て終わらせるのが良いんじゃないかと思った次第です。色んな考え方があると思いますが、みなさんの最強のマウンティング理論も教えて下さい。
